One of Hurtigruten’s most well-known ship names is returning to the fleet. From mid-May 2025, the ship currently operating as MS Otto Sverdrup will be known by its original name: MS Finnmarken.

Hurtigruten Expeditions’ third battery-hybrid powered ship, the upgraded MS Otto Sverdup, has departed on its maiden voyage this week from Hamburg, Germany.

After a successful return to sailing in June, Hurtigruten has released its plans to further ramp-up operations with 14 of 16 ships returning in August and September. Additionally, a series of new itineraries in the British Isles are also planned over the coming months.

Hurtigruten is offering adventurous guests the choice between brand-new expedition cruises to handpicked ports on revamped ships that are also retrofitted for green hybrid propulsion, or environmentally friendly classic coastal cruises to all 34 ports from Bergen to Kirkenes during Hurtigruten’s 2021 season.

Hurtigruten has confirmed it will convert three of its existing ships to premium, hybrid-powered expedition ships. Utilising the same technology that is fuelling the Norwegian cruise company’s newest ‘green ship’, MS Roald Amundsen, Hurtigruten plans to install battery packs to MS Trollfjord, MS Finnmarken and MS Midnatsol, relaunching them all by 2021 under new names and operating year-long itineraries along the Norwegian coastline.

Hurtigruten has confirmed its most extensive ship upgrade to date will include not only redesigned cabins and suites (including the debut of five large suites with panoramic views), but low-emission engines, a state-of-the-art Science Center, and four new restaurants.
