China Eastern Airlines will launch a new direct flight between Shanghai and Marseille, France from 2 July, operated by Shanghai Airlines (a subsidiary of China Eastern).
Operating there times a week on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, the estimated flight time is around 12 hours, and provides a new route to France for the Oceania region.
Marseille is France’s second-largest city and the biggest port in southern Europe. In 1987, Shanghai and Marseille became sister cities.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and France, as well as the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism. From 28 July to 8 August 2024, Marseille will host sailing events of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
The launch of the Shanghai-Marseille flight will establish the first direct air corridor between the city pairs. China Eastern Airlines will also become the first airline to operate on this route.
