SH Hotels & Resorts, the sustainable hotel brand founded by Barry Sternlicht, will open 1 Hotel Tokyo in 2025, marking the debut of the eco-conscious brand in Japan.

A collaboration with Mori Trust, one of Japan’s leading property developers, the new hotel will feature in the Tokyo World Gate Akasaka project, blending retail, offices, and a luxurious hotel experience in the heart of Tokyo’s Akasaka district.

“Partnering with Mori Trust, we see a vision realized—a shared vision that transcends mere accommodation and embodies a commitment to nature, luxury, and cultural preservation in Tokyo, a city renowned for its innovation and sophistication,” 1 Hotels Founder and SH Hotels & Resorts Chairman Sternlicht said.

“To world travellers, Japan is revered for the beauty of its gardens and the serenity of the soul. We have tried to mirror this with our 1 Hotel Tokyo. It’s part of our pledge to create exceptional hospitality experiences that embrace the next generation of luxury travellers.”

1 Hotel Tokyo will have sustainability at its core, having received the prestigious Rank S certification from CASBEE (Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environment Efficiency), signalling its top-tier environmental performance.

The property will feature advanced water and energy conservation systems, rainwater recycling, and the use of reclaimed materials in its design.

“Our commitment to sustainability is woven into the hotel’s very fabric, from energy and water conservation systems to the use of reclaimed materials, creating a sanctuary that respects and enhances its environment,” SH Hotels Hotels & Resorts CEO Raul Leal said. “And with its biophilic design and focus on wellness and nature-inspired, community-minded experiences, 1 Hotel Tokyo brings a serene calm—creating an oasis in the heart of Tokyo’s bustling urban environment.”

The hotel’s design draws inspiration from Japan’s natural landscapes and traditional craftsmanship, incorporating biophilic elements like moss-covered boulders and Zen garden motifs. Guests will experience serene surroundings with natural materials such as Oya stone, used in the iconic buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright.

In addition to its sustainable features, the hotel will offer 211 spacious rooms and world-class amenities, including a wellness centre, spa, indoor pool, and meeting spaces.
