Aurora Expeditions has unveiled the first ever women-only Antarctic expedition cruise, to be hosted by international bestselling author and award-winning travel photographer Lola Akinmade Åkerström.

The Antarctic Direct: Fly the Drake Fly/Fly Women’s Only expedition will celebrate women in exploration, storytelling, and conservation, with Åkerström to be joined by special guest Dr. Sandra H. “Sandy” Magnus, a former NASA astronaut.

Departing on 23 February 2027, this exclusive expedition will take place aboard the Sylvia Earle, a vessel named after the legendary oceanographer which honours six pioneering women in conservation.

“This is more than a trip; it’s a community of women coming together to explore one of the most pristine places on the planet,” said Åkerström. “I’m honoured to host this transformational journey and help foster new stories, friendships, and memories in the awe-inspiring landscapes of Antarctica.”

Åkerström brings a global perspective, having photographed and reported from over 80 countries. Recognised as a Hasselblad Heroine, her accolades include the Condé Nast Traveller Women Who Travel Power List, the Newsweek Future of Travel Award for Storytelling, and MIPAD 100’s Most Influential People of African Descent.

This women-led voyage will fly over the often-turbulent Drake Passage in both directions, maximising time spent on the Antarctic continent. With golden late-summer sunsets, active wildlife, and towering glaciers, participants can expect breathtaking scenery and an unforgettable experience.

Designed by women, led by women, and for women, the expedition aims to offer “camaraderie, courage, and connection”.
