HX Expeditions has unveiled its most expansive and innovative Antarctic kayaking and camping program to date, with a 188% rise in kayaking capacity and a doubling of camping spots to commence in October 2025.

Under the new program, the expedition cruise line will be able to accommodate up to 60 camping guests per night, all while maintaining “the highest standards of environmental stewardship” and fully complying with the guidelines of IAATO, of which HX is a founding member.

“We’re not just adding more spots, we’re reimagining how guests experience Antarctica,” said Karin Strand, Vice President of Expeditions Development. A seasoned polar expert with over 150 Antarctic journeys, Strand designed the new programming to make the continent more accessible than ever.

“With expanded kayaking and camping capacity, plus greater flexibility and access – we’re opening the polar regions to more adventurers than ever before.”

“Whether you’re gliding past icebergs on your kayak or sleeping under the stars, we’re here to help you write your own Antarctic story,” she explained.

Among the key innovations for the 2025/26 season are the introduction of Discovery Kayaks. These inflatable, solo, self-guided vessels that offer an intimate and independent paddling experience. Designed in partnership with top water sports experts NRS and Escape Watersports, the Discovery Kayak experience is an industry first, priced at 129 euros per person.

Also new is the Bivvy Bag camping experience — a lightweight, low-impact way to sleep under the Antarctic sky. The new HX Bivvy is a custom-built, top-tier set-up sourced from Scandinavia, offering a raw, explorer-style adventure for 350 euros per person.

The expanded activity program now includes two styles of kayaking, two camping options, snowshoeing, polar plunges, and extended hikes (depending on ship capabilities and guest interest). Solo travellers are welcome, with no partner or English fluency required for kayaking or camping participation.

For 2025/26, HX will also simplify bookings by eliminating its previous lottery system. Kayaking and camping spots will now be allocated onboard on a first-come, first-served basis, providing real-time flexibility depending on weather and guest preferences.

“Experiencing Antarctica must come with responsibility,” Strand stressed. “We work within the framework of IAATO guidelines to ensure our presence leaves no trace — minimising impact, respecting wildlife, and preserving the pristine beauty of the polar environment for generations to come.”
