Las Vegas Sands this week broke ground on a new US $8 billion “ultra-luxurious resort and entertainment destination” in Singapore. The still-unnamed project will serve as a counterpart to the Marina Bay Sands. It was first flagged pre-pandemic, in April 2019.

The project will comprise a 570-suite luxury hotel tower capped with rooftop pools and dining experiences; it will also house luxury retail boutiques, gaming, holistic spa and wellness amenities, and approximately 200,000 square feet of meeting space. A 15,000-seat arena will also be part of the complex.

Good to know: Safdie Architects—the firm behind Marina Bay Sands’ design—is again taking the lead on this new project. By the time the new ultra-luxury development is complete, Las Vegas Sands will have invested more than US $15 billion into the complex since it started operations in Singapore in 2010.

Set at a 45-degree angle to frame views of both the Marina Bay and the Singapore Strait, the hotel tower spans 55 storeys. A focal point of the design will be biophilic elements, with a significant number of green amenities across the development.

Signature Spaces

The crème de la crème, however, will be the 7,060-square-meter Skyloop. Here, several points of public access include an observatory, destination restaurants and rooftop gardens. Further above, hotel guests can enjoy private cabanas, infinity-edge pools and more. There will also be a cantilevered wellness terrace that is designed for yoga, arts and specialty events.

Adjacent to the hotel tower, “the podium” will serve as the hotspot for business, entertainment and cultural exchange. At its core is a 15,000-seat arena helmed by Populous, which is responsible for the likes of the Sphere in Las Vegas and O2 Arena in London. The space will be integrated with new and existing developments within the Marina Bay precinct for greater pedestrian connectivity, providing direct access to the Bayfront MRT station and linkways between Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay.

A Commitment to Sustainability

In line with Marina Bay Sands’ global strategy “Sands ECO360,” sustainability will remain at the forefront of construction and operations. On the guest-facing side, a self-shading façade system utilises high-performance glazing and internal blinds to lower direct solar heat transfer and improve energy efficiency. Each suite will also have its own private terrace and garden, while outdoor dining venues will be fitted with canopies.
