In a landmark event for both river cruising and Colombian tourism, AmaWaterways officially christened its newest ship, AmaMagdalena, on Tuesday in the UNESCO-designated city of Mompox.

The ceremony followed the April launch of the first-ever luxury river cruise ship to sail the iconic Magdalena River.

“Today’s christening ceremony in Mompox marks a powerful moment not just for AmaWaterways, but for the future of river cruising,” Rudi Schreiner, Co-Founder and CEO of AmaWaterways, said. “AmaMagdalena represents years of collaboration, vision and trust between our team and our Colombian partners.”

The outdoor celebration drew local dignitaries including the Governor of the Bolívar Department and the Mayor of Mompox, alongside national representatives from the Ministries of Tourism, Transport and Defence. Their presence was a sign of strong support from both public and private sectors, reflecting three years of coordinated efforts with AmaWaterways.

Serving as godmother to AmaMagdalena was interior designer and Colombian entrepreneur Marianna Schlegel Donado, a native of Barranquilla and former Queen of the Barranquilla Carnival. Schlegel played an integral role in shaping the ship’s design.

“Being named godmother of AmaMagdalena is an incredible honour — both as a designer and as a proud Colombian,” she said. “This ship carries the soul of our country: its colours, its craftsmanship, its warmth.”

Custom-built for just 60 guests, AmaMagdalena showcases the artistry of local craftspeople. Architect Camilo Restrepo led the ship’s design, with furnishings by Casa Schlegel Donado and handcrafted woodwork from Cartagena-based Ocean Projects. Amenities include a Sun Deck pool, a fitness room, and two dining venues, including the Bolívar Restaurant offering al fresco meals.

AmaWaterways Co-Founder and Chief Brand Ambassador Kristin Karst reflected on the moment. “This ceremony is more than a celebration of a new ship — it’s a bold step forward in river cruising and a celebration of cultural discovery,” she said.

Two immersive seven-night itineraries – Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia – connect Cartagena and Barranquilla, featuring exclusive local experiences.

Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia, praised the project. “AmaMagdalena embodies what Colombia stands for: a vibrant, authentic destination filled with natural and cultural beauty,” she said.

AmaWaterways plans to expand further in Colombia with the upcoming launch of AmaMelodia later this year.
