Dubai-based hospitality firm Jumeirah has confirmed its first foray into Africa, partnering with the Thanda Group to introduce two iconic destinations on the continent – Jumeirah Thanda Island in Tanzania and Jumeirah Thanda Safari in South Africa.

Located in the Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve in Tanzania, Jumeirah Thanda Island is a secluded, five-hectare private retreat. Guests will enjoy an exclusive-use villa with five suites and two traditional Swahili Bandas, offering direct access to the Indian Ocean. The island provides numerous activities, including swimming with whale sharks, sailing on traditional Arab dhows, and exploring nearby Chole Island. A focus on ocean stewardship, including coral reef restoration and sea turtle conservation, is also part of the experience.

Announcing the new properties, Jumeirah’s Chief Operating Officer Thomas Meier outlined the brand’s intentions. “As we look to the future, our intent for Jumeirah is clear. We want to grow sustainably into new destinations and diversify our portfolio with a focus on properties that offer a distinct proposition and deliver enriching guest experiences rooted in culture and connection,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jumeirah Thanda Safari offers a unique experience in South Africa’s northern KwaZulu Natal, in one of Africa’s most exclusive Big Five game reserves. The expansive 16,500-hectare reserve will feature luxury accommodation, including the Jumeirah Residences at the Royal Thanda Club, as well as personalised wildlife adventures such as game drives, bush walks, and cultural experiences tied to the Zulu community.Pierre Delvaux, CEO of the Thanda Group said the new tie-up aligns well with the group’s ethos and values, particularly concerning philanthropy and nature conservation. “Now, on the 20th anniversary of opening our first lodge, we are thrilled to embark on the next chapter of our journey,” he said.

“It is a true privilege to partner with Jumeirah, and the entire Thanda team is filled with excitement and optimism for what the future holds. Our collective mission with Jumeirah remains to create magic for our guests and members, while elevating our offering and guest experiences to new heights.”

Both properties will open for bookings in December 2024.
