Antarctica Flights marked its first trip of the 2020/2021 season last weekend as the Qantas 787 Dreamliner took its maiden flight across the Southern Ocean from Sydney to cruise above Antarctica.

The trip provided a full day of Antarctic experiences, with a live cross to one of the Australian Antarctic research stations. Polar expeditioners were on board to talk through the extraordinary environment in view.

Until now, these flights had been undertaken by Boeing 747 jumbo jets, however the aircraft’s recent retirement paved the way for the 787 Dreamliner, affording even better views from its larger windows of the rugged topography, icebergs and ice floes from above. The flight accommodated nearly 220 passengers, and strict COVID-19 protocols were in place to ensure the health and safety of all guests on board.
